my afternoon involved contacting a landlord to figure out a sketchy renting situation i am involved in. he asked to meet in person, face to face, to figure it all out. the phone doesn't suit him well. he is old and Chinese. he has trouble hearing, as well as speaking english. and so, i went, greeted by his wife at the door. up one flight of stairs, i entered a very full living space. the fill consisted of anything you can think of, stacked high and far. the wife lead me along a small pathway to a seated eldery man, Simon. (the situation involves two parties being promised the same apartment, one agreed to pay $1900/mo and the other $2100/mo, my party being the former.) admist deciphering the predicament, Simon made my day. i'm often under the impression that money, and only money, talks in this country. today, my impression was different. when asked where i would be living come october if i didn't get this apartment, i informed him i had no other place lined up. he told me the $200 extra would be nice, but that it hurt his heart to think i would not have a home. he thought there were more important things in this world than money; i agreed. and so, by the kind heart of an elderly man, i smile and patiently await a phone call informing me of my future living situation.
